The Story of
the Silver Ribbon The Silver Ribbon Campaign for
the Brain was founded in 1993, by Jean Liechty of Newport Beach, CA.
Advocates for HIV/AIDS had experienced tremendous success with their Red
Ribbon. Their symbol had generated support and funding for research, which
was just what we wanted and needed for people with mental illness and brain
disorders. In 1997, we began selling the metallic pins, instead of just
wearing folded over ribbons. The demand became so great that by 1999 NARSAD
Artworks came on board to distribute the pins, and to develop additional
Silver Ribbon products. In 1999, SilverRibbon.org, our
beautiful website, went up and we began in earnest our campaign for a Silver
Ribbon First Class Brain Disability Awareness Postage Stamp. A support letter
was posted, to print, sign and send. Over 50,000 letters have been received
by the U.S. Postal Service, many from members of Congress as well as
Governors and Administrators. Brian Kelly, of Orland Park. IL, has collected
over 42,000 letters of support, and has visited Washington, D.C. to lobby for
the stamp. In 2004, Hal and Patsy
Hollister of La Habra CA, assumed leadership of the Silver Ribbon Campaign
for the Brain. Under their able stewardship, we look forward to continuing to
grow and prosper, and gather strength. The Silver Ribbon will continue to be
the acknowledged symbol of fighting stigma throughout the world. The
Hollisters are also founders of NARSAD Artworks. The Silver Ribbon Campaign for the Brain is
a Registered Trademark, for promoting public awareness of the need for
support of people with brain disorders and disabilities. No other use is
